Terrace House at Bangsawan

This project first appeared to us like an uncomplicated open and shut case. But each time we decided to shut it, it opened itself up again! Until the entire house was aglow…

Our assignment was to transform a somewhat limiting terrace house into more open, liberating living quarters. The main challenge was the shape of the plot of land on which it was situated. It was narrow and a bit short. However, focusing on the good showed us that, the rear of the house was blessed with a large public football field— green, sunny, breezy and a reminder of those carefree childhood days…

Highlighting this asset and preserving this mental image was our primary strategy.

To begin with, we opened up the kitchen to the living room so that all dwellers on the ground floor could view the vast green football field. Additionally, we incorporated large openings and glass walls on the front and sides of the house to welcome the sun. This naturally gave the illusion of more space, especially on first impression. But we didn’t stop there!

Our next step was to limit blocking and walling throughout the house and let spaces flow from the front of the house till the very back of it. In this way, we made complete use of the illumination streaming in from the frontal and rear portions portions.

On the Ground floor, the Living, Kitchen and Dining areas flowed from one to the other without any formal segregation. All walls were replaced with movable glass doors and partitions, enlarging the premise into a seemingly much larger space.

The final icing on this cake was building a third storey with an additional family room. This room was created with the intention to help manifest some memorable family moments for the owners. The place for precious times of togetherness and sharing.

We also included the essential grand balcony. Of course it faced the football field but better than that, are the sunsets that one can bask in every evening – A luxury the residents of the Terrace House at Bangsawan never experienced in this way before…

We engage people and places to create designs that enrich the world.
